close ups of Garden Joy

Garden Joy is an expression of color and light showing the transient nature of being outside with sun and shadows and the shifting patterns of the natural world. Varied techniques of applying the paint with the knife and brush, even fingers or other objects, help to create movement and expressions of emotion and spirit through the exuberance of a child. Through the eyes of a child we experience nature as larger than life, alive and swirling around us in a jungle of foliage, flowers, movement and light.

close-ups of Phinney Garden

This painting was done en plein air...  I painted Phinney Garden in my backyard over the course of the summer.  Painting outdoors over a period of time presents different lighting and natural elements missed while painting in the studio.

I wanted to capture the simple beauty of a classic Seattle garden; something you might see if you were walking around in a neighborhood during a visit to the Pacific Northwest.  Our lawn is an uneven mix of grass and weeds backed by a rockery made of stacked concrete pieces.  Calla Lillies, Hosta, Rhodadendrons and groundcovers help complete the picture.

close-ups of Vietnamese Alley

This painting was done from a photograph taken by the love of my life on her trip around the world in 2006. She visited 25 countries in 10 months!

I loved painting this scene because it is such a beautiful juxtaposition of color and light, beauty and grit. The colors of the walls are vibrant and pretty, and yet they are dirty and grimey; the soft beauty of the delicate paper lanterns contrasted with the craggy, colorless stone of the alley.
